Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies

Picture
Ace Combat 04 is the fourth installment of the Ace Combat Series on the PlayStation 2. It is also the first Ace Combat game for the Playstation 2 game system.

Game Plot
2004. The continent of USEA is in turmoil as the western country of Erusea begins its attacks on the neighboring Independent States, after the fragments of an asteroid set the world in ruins. Now the Independent States Allied Forces (ISAF) is trying to retake their rightful land, against all odds. You are the tip of the ISAF counterattack as Mobius 1.

Game Overview

Aircraft and Weapons
18 aircraft, including one fictional super aircraft. Each aircraft has three different paint schemes. There are 15 special weapons made available for purchase through the campaign.

Multiplayer
AC04 is the second Ace Combat game with a split-screen Multiplayer mode, where two players can go head-to-head in a dogfight in three maps without enemies. They can also dogfight while taking on enemy aircraft, the Yellow Squadron or a contest for points by destroying air and ground targets.

Cutscenes
In AC04, the cut scenes are in the form of stylized still animations, narrated by another character following the steps of the player. There are also a few cut scenes using aircraft models from the game at the end or beginning of some missions.

Character Information

Independent State Allied Forces

Mobius One – The ISAF’s leading Ace. Mobius One is extremely mysterious and very little is known about him. He is part of Mobius Squadron, deployed in September 2004.

AWACS Sky Eye – an AWACS operator onboard an E-767 which directly supports the Mobius Squadron. As the war waged on, “Sky Eye” became the most combat efficient AWACS in all of ISAF.

Lieutenant Baelz – an ISAF Captain of Unit B; a landing group at Crowne Beach. He is the acting frontline ground commander of Operation Bunker Shot.

Sergeant Collins – takes over command of Unit B at Crowne Beach when Lt. Baelz is killed by A-10 fire.
Erusian Forces

Yellow 13 - The Erusean “Ace of Aces”. He is the leader of the world-famous and feared 156th TFW 'Yellow'. He prides himself on the fact that he has never lost a squadron member. While said to be the, “best pilot on the Usean Continent” he does not take this seriously and is a somewhat quiet person.

Yellow 4 – Yellow 13’s wingman, also the only female pilot in the squadron. She and Yellow 13 had known one another before entering the Erusean Military and had grown a strong bond between each other. Yellow 4, while seeming gentle, will not let any harm come near Yellow 13, not even on land.

Super Weapons

Picture
The Stonehenge Turret Network.
One of the trademark features of the Ace Combat Series is definitely its super weapons and they are back in this installment as well.

Stonehenge
This facility is located in the southwestern part of the Sandberry Desert in the USEA continent. It is ISAF's greatest threat as it can eradicate planes within range with a devastating barrage. Originally built to destroy the Ulysses Asteroid, upon falling into the hands of the Erusian Military, Stonehenge was responsible for securing most of the airspace across the Usean Continent.

Megalith
Construction of Megalith began after April 2nd, 2005. Intended to be a last ditch weapon against the ISAF, Megalith would see operation after the Usean Continental War's official end.

Shattered Skies Original Soundtrack

Picture
The Ace Combat 4 Shattered Skies Original Soundtrack is the most revolutionary of all Ace Combat soundtracks to date. The two composers who remained with the Ace Combat Namco Sound Team Music Staff after AC3, Tetsukazu Nakanishi and Hiroshi Okubo, completely re-invented their previous music styles (such as ambient and electronic used in the previous game), to a mainly orchestral one. All Ace Combat OSTs since AC4's are still composed with orchestral instruments at its core. A choir was used for the first time in an Ace Combat soundtrack. Guitar influences from Air Combat and AC2 were also revived, this time featuring both electric and acoustic guitars in a variety of tracks in the score. However, the most notable event in the soundtrack's production was the hiring of inexperienced composer Keiki Kobayashi to the Namco Sound Team. The AC4 OST was the first major musical production that Keiki Kobayashi participated in, and his work in the soundtrack ultimately assured his promotion as Music Director in the Ace Combat series for the next games to come.
